Unforgettable 48th Moore & Giles Virginia 10 Miler

2 Female Course Records Broken

LYNCHBURG, VA – For two consecutive years participants from 33 states and 5 countries enjoyed unseasonably cool temperatures in the lower 50s as they completed the 48th running of the Moore & Giles Virginia 10 Miler events.

More than 2,200 participants completed the 10 mile run, 4+mile run or 4+mile walk. The event was supported by more than 1,000 volunteers representing area non-profits, colleges and universities, and civic organizations.

Monica Ngige (Lansing, MI) set a new course record of 53:16. The previous record, set in 2019 by Vicoty Chepngeno (Grand Praire, TX), was beaten by 23 seconds. This is the second time the female course record has been broken in the last 3 races. Prior to this, the female record stood for 23 years. Ngige was followed by second place finisher Sarah Naibei (Chapel Hill, NC) 54:20 and third place finisher Weynshet Weldetsadik (Washington DC) 54:54.

With one of the most talented elite men’s fields in years, a pack of 8 men found themselves in contention for a Championship with just 2 miles left. By the bottom of Farm Basket Hill with just 1.5 miles to go the pack was down to 5. This year’s Champion Melkamu Wube’s (Lansing, MI) kick made the difference over the final 400 meters. His final time was 47:48. The top 4 men all finished under 48:00 and within 8 seconds of each other. Wube was followed by James Ngandu (Van Wert, OH) 47:49, Shadrack Keter (Chapel Hill, NC) 47:51 and Sam Chalega (Colorado Springs, CO) 47:56.

Both Wube (47:48) and Ngige (53:16) were crowned Road Runners Club of America Virginia State Champions with their performances.

Raleigh Distance Project team member Nikki Long (Cary, NC) set a Virginia 4+Miler female course record completing the 4.3 mile distance in 26:04. This bested the previous record set by Ann Mazur (Charlottesville, VA) in 2021 by 27 seconds. In a close Men’s Virginia 4+ Miler, Jackson Schulte (Elkhard, IA) won the event with a time of 23:49.

The 49th running of the Moore & Giles Virginia 10 Miler will be held on September 30, 2023, with special “one-week” only pricing for the events Thursday, September 29th.

Since 1973, the mission of the Lynchburg Road Runners Club is to promote health and wellness in the Lynchburg community through the sport of running.
